Dear Saint Luke Families,
My name is Alyssa Roher and I am the reading specialist at Saint Luke School. I have several years of experience working with students in grades K-8, and I am state certified in literacy. I will be providing pull-out and push-in literacy support for students needing academic intervention. I will be working with students 1:1 and in small groups.
I believe learning should be purposeful and fun! For early readers, I will be focusing on identifying letters and their sounds, sight words, fluency (good pacing and expression), and comprehension. For students who know their letters and sounds, I will be focusing on phonics (“word identification skills”- International Reading Association), sight words, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
I think reading is also essential outside of school. Below are some fun activities:
Read books and magazines
Listen to e-books
Play board games—Ex: Scrabble, Boggle, Monopoly, and Pictionary
Play letter/word Bingo
Play Quiddler (card game with letters and numbers)
Read a recipe and make it
Read the lyrics to a song
Write a song and sing it to a family member or friend
Take a trip to a museum and record interesting facts
Take a walk in your neighborhood and record words that you are learning in school
Look at a photograph of someone and share how that person is feeling
I look forward to a great year working with you as we build a strong home-school connection! I will be working closely with the classroom teachers as we support our students. I can be reached at email@example.com or at 718.746.3833.
